Pregnancy is of vital importance for most women, therefore it is essential to ensure the safety of both the mother and the baby by being mindful of the types of food the mother consumes. Here is a list of some foods to avoid during pregnancy :

  • Raw meat

Avoid undercooked meat, especially sausages or minced meat. Ensure they are cooked thoroughly so there’s no trace of blood. The tiny parasite that is found in raw meat can harm the baby.

  • Raw eggs

Only eat eggs that are cooked until the yolks and whites are solid. Avoid foods that contain raw eggs, such as home made mayonnaise or mousse.

  • Caffeine

Avoid caffeine during the first trimester to reduce the chances of a miscarriage or premature birth. Your caffeine intake should be limited to no more than 200mg a day during pregnancy.

  • Unpasteurized milk

All milk sold in shops or supermarkets is pasteurized and fine to drink. Unpasteurized milk may contain ‘listeria’, a bacteria which can be harmful to the baby.

  • Foods with soil on them

Always wash fruits and vegetables before consuming them. Be careful to remove all traces of soil and visible dirt.

  • Fish exposed to industrial pollutants

It is best to avoid fish from contaminated lakes and rivers that may be exposed to high levels of poisonous chemicals.
